Kanye West (YE) just had his Korea concert called off, and it’s causing a stir. Coupang Play, who was organizing the event, dropped the news on the 19th via social media and other channels, saying: “Due to the recent controversy surrounding the singer Kanye West, we regret to inform you that the ‘YE Korea Concert’ scheduled for the 31st has been unavoidably canceled.”
Coupang Play also said, “We ask for the kind understanding of those who were looking forward to the concert,” and added that “Ticket purchasers will be contacted individually regarding refunds.”
On top of that, they announced that Yeezy merch sales are getting shut down too. “Additionally, the sale of ‘Yeezy’ (Kanye West’s brand) merchandise will be discontinued starting at 1 PM today,” they shared.
While they didn’t spell out exactly what controversy they meant, it clearly connects to Kanye’s string of pro-Nazi and anti-Semitic stuff he’s been saying online.
Back in 2022, he went on a far-right conspiracy show and said, “Hitler invented the microphones and the highways,” and “I love Nazis.” That didn’t sit well with folks, obviously. He also posted an image mixing a Nazi symbol with the ‘Star of David,’ which represents Judaism and Jewish people.
Then earlier this year, in February, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I am a Nazi” and “I love Hitler,” which brought another wave of backlash. Most recently, on May 8th—Victory in Europe Day, no less—he dropped a track titled “Heil Hitler.”
Because of these comments, brands that were working with him have been cutting ties. The backlash has been serious and ongoing.
