GI DLE Becomes i dle on Their 7th Anniversary—A New Chapter Begins

“(G)I-DLE Changes Team Name to ‘i-dle’ on Their 7th Debut Anniversary, Opening a New Chapter.

On May 2nd, the girl group (G)I-DLE officially changed their team name to ‘i-dle’ in celebration of their 7th debut anniversary. Yep, they’re leaving behind the name they’ve had since debuting back on May 2, 2018.

Cube Entertainment shared on the 2nd, “i-dle will be making a fresh start as i-dle, leaving behind the group name they have been with since their debut on May 2nd, 2018.”

They’ve taken out the ‘G’ and ‘Yeoja’ from their old names—(G)I-DLE and (여자)아이들. Now, it’s just ‘i-dle’—clean and simple.

The group’s always played with the idea of parentheses. In fact, they were known for showing the “aesthetics of parentheses.” These symbols (()) usually mean something optional or extra, but for i-dle, they used it to make a deeper point—like putting something in brackets to look at it objectively, even distancing from it a little.

And now, with the parentheses gone, Cube has something to say about that too: “Through this, i-dle has re-established the group’s identity as one that cannot be defined by ‘female’, ‘gender’, or any other gender. At the same time, by eliminating the parentheses, which are used as symbols to distinguish or emphasize certain parts, they will showcase even more limitless music and concepts.”

They’re making it clear—they’re not just a “girl” group anymore. It’s about who they are, not how they’re labeled.

Along with the new name, they’ve dropped a fresh logo and symbol too. It’s all lowercase—’i d l e‘—and it’s designed using point, line, and plane principles, expanding from a circular shape. According to Cube, that’s meant to show their endless potential and how everything’s organically connected.

And get this—there’s also a symbol where five “i”s come together to form a star. That’s to represent the five members and their totally unique personalities coming together as one. Cube explained it like this: “In particular, the symbol where five ‘i’s come together to form a star represents the five members of i-dle, each with their own distinct personalities, uniting to be reborn as one integrated i-dle.”

The timing makes sense too. All five members renewed their contracts with Cube Entertainment last December, and ever since, they’ve been getting ready for this rebrand.

Now, if you’ve followed i-dle at all, you know they’ve had hit after hit—starting from ‘LATATA’, and then there’s ‘Oh my god’, ‘DUMDi DUMDi’, ‘HWAA’, ‘TOMBOY’, ‘Nxde’, and ‘Queencard’.

Their second full album, ‘2’, crushed it on the charts last year with the title track ‘Super Lady’. The B-side ‘Fate (나는 아픈 건 딱 질색이니까)’ even made a comeback on the charts. And let’s not forget their 7th mini album ‘I SWAY’, which also did super well with ‘Klaxon’.

On top of all that, they went global with their 3rd world tour, hitting up 14 cities and meeting fans all around the world. They even took home big awards—the Grand Record Award at the 2024 KGMA and Record of the Year at the 2024 Melon Music Awards.

Looks like this isn’t just a name change—it’s the start of a whole new era for i-dle.
