JTBC “Beyond the Bar” Episode 8 Recap: Jung Chae-yeon, Hong Soo-hyun, Lee Jin-wook Lead Emotional Trial.
In the latest episode of JTBC’s weekend drama “Beyond the Bar”, actress Jung Chae-yeon’s character Kang Hyo-min took a firm stand to defend her best friend’s sister, played by Hong Soo-hyun. The 8th episode, which aired on the 24th, centered on the case of star anchor Han Seol-yeon (Hong Soo-hyun), who was accused of assaulting her husband.
Han Seol-yeon, a well-known news anchor and older sister of Kang Hyo-min’s long-time friend Han Seol-a (Kwon Ah-reum), became a client of the Yullim litigation team. She was charged with assault while under the influence of prescribed medication. Despite her social reputation, she admitted she had no memory of the incident.
During the case, Kang Hyo-min and Lee Jin-wook’s character Yun Seok-hun uncovered that Han Seol-yeon had been a victim of domestic violence. When this was revealed, Han Seol-a broke down in tears, blaming herself for not realizing her sister’s situation earlier.

Han Seol-yeon later made a difficult admission:
“At first, I installed the CCTV to see what happened while I was blacked out,” she explained. “After that, I found myself watching that CCTV video over and over again. The person in the video looked like Wonder Woman. Something that was tightly blocked inside me seemed to be released. I could finally breathe after a long time.”
She added, “After that incident, I made a meal for my husband. When I approached him, he flinched, just as I always did. But a few days later, he came home drunk and hit me again. I was depressed and couldn’t sleep, so I took the medicine on purpose, even though I knew what would happen. I wanted to transform into Wonder Woman and punish him.”
Faced with the law, Kang Hyo-min pointed out the legal complication, saying, “If it’s an act that is free in its cause, even if we argue for mental incapacity, a not-guilty verdict might not be possible.”
But Han Seol-a demanded her friend keep a promise made years ago: “Do you remember? When I asked you to teach me sign language, I made a condition. ‘Promise to grant me one wish, unconditionally, just once in our lives.’ Let’s use that promise now.”
Despite her hesitation, Kang Hyo-min eventually agreed. After discussing with Yun Seok-hun, who reminded her, “The justice I believe in is protecting my people,” she chose to protect her best friend’s family. She concealed evidence, including the CCTV video, and instructed Han Seol-yeon, “You can refuse to make statements that could be disadvantageous. But do not make false statements.”
In the courtroom, Kang Hyo-min and Yun Seok-hun succeeded in their strategy. Han Seol-yeon was ultimately acquitted, walking free after a tense trial.
