The tvN weekend drama “Bon Appetit, Your Majesty” (The Tyrant’s Chef) is drawing strong attention for its romantic development between Im Yoon-ah and Lee Chae-min. Directed by Jang Tae-yu, the series blends food, time travel, and palace intrigue into a story that’s quickly making viewers’ hearts flutter.
At the center is chef Yeon Ji-yeong (Im Yoon-ah), who suddenly finds herself transported into the past. Her first encounter with King Yi-heon (Lee Chae-min) came at the hunting grounds of King Yeon-hee. It wasn’t smooth—he branded her a traitor and showed obsession rather than kindness. But her unique cooking, like French bibimbap with gochujang and butter, pulled Yi-heon in almost immediately.

Soon after, dishes such as sous vide steak and venison courses captured the King’s absolute sense of taste. Her meals reminded him of his late mother and, in turn, she was elevated to head chef of the royal kitchen. What followed were moments where food became more than survival. Warm chicken soup filled his loneliness, doenjang pasta soothed his mood, while burdock root and schnitzel taught Yi-heon to focus on essence, not surface.
That bond translated into something deeper. Yi-heon started keeping a diary he named “Mangunrok” (to yearn for the clouds) —a phrase Ji-yeong once used—documenting the food and their shared days. The King, who once asked her harshly “Do you want to die?”, now prepares gifts and worries about her injuries. It’s a dramatic change that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the audience.
Ji-yeong herself is shifting too. She couldn’t sleep after a drunken kiss from Yi-heon, and her disappointed face when he skipped a meal signaled that his presence is now affecting her. Still, she holds onto thoughts of her father, left alone in the future, making her choice unclear.
For viewers, the sweet tension—sometimes playful, sometimes anxious—is becoming the core appeal of the drama. How the pair, bound by food and affection, will resolve their relationship across time is the big question.
Episode 7 of “Bon Appetit, Your Majesty” airs on September 13 at 9:10 PM KST.
