Webtoon to Screen: Yuk Jun-seo Joins the Fight in “ONE: High School Heroes”
On the morning of the 28th, the cast and crew of Wavve’s original series “ONE: High School Heroes” showed up at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, for the production presentation. Director Lee Sung-tae, along with actors Lee Jung-ha, Kim Do-wan, Kim Sang-ho, Kim Joo-ryoung, Yoo Hee-je, Yuk Jun-seo, and Im Sung-kyun were all there.
So what’s the drama about? It’s a high school action-packed story based on the popular Kakao Webtoon “ONE,” which has racked up over 65 million views. The plot follows Eui-gyeom (Lee Jung-ha), a top student struggling under his dad’s thumb, and Yoon-Gi (Kim Do-wan), who wants to use Eui-gyeom’s crazy fighting skills for his own plans. Together, they become the masked “High School Heroes,” fighting back against the messed-up violence hierarchy at school.

Now, when director Lee was asked why he cast Yuk Jun-seo, who folks know more from variety shows, as Gwi Jae, he got real honest.
“I agonized a lot over the casting. Gwi Jae is a charming character in the original webtoon, and he also appeared as a legendary character in author Lee Eun-jae’s previous work, ‘Ten.’ This is the difficulty of adapting a work with an existing fanbase. If we can’t create a character that satisfies the fans, it could be challenging. I thought very deeply about who to cast.”
He added, “My specific concerns were about an actor who could express Gwi Jae’s aura and force. If it became a one-dimensional portrayal, it would be a mess and dangerous. While contemplating this, I met Yuk Jun-seo. After several conversations and discussing character development together, I discovered that he didn’t try to force the expression but rather created it based on his own feelings. I consistently requested that from Jun-seo, and he also underwent rigorous training, combining martial arts with such acting expressions, perfectly portraying the character on set. I think he’s incredibly cool.”
As for Yuk Jun-seo himself, when asked if this was just a one-time try or a full-on career move, he didn’t hesitate.
“Before starting acting, there was ‘The Iron Squad’ and UDT, but even before that, art was my voice. In art, what I consider most important is to express myself and voice my opinions without worrying about others. After trying acting, I realized that acting also follows the same path as art. There’s no reason to refuse, and I intend to seize any opportunity and dedicate my life to acting activities in the future.”
