Really sad news today—broadcaster Lee Sang-yong, better known to many as “Uncle Popeye,” has passed away. He was 81.
He collapsed earlier this morning while he was on his way back home from a hospital near where he lived in Seocho-gu, Seoul. It’s been reported that it was due to health issues.
He was rushed to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital and got emergency treatment right away, but sadly, he didn’t make it. He passed away around 12:45 PM on the 9th.
Mr. Lee was born in Seocheon, South Chungcheong Province, and became a beloved figure across the country. Folks knew him best from his work as a broadcaster and MC on shows like “Stage of Friendship,” where he earned the warm nickname “Uncle Popeye.”
