Yoon Hyun-min Talks About His Stepmother and Late Father’s Love
Actor Yoon Hyun-min got real about his family history on the April 27th episode of SBS’s My Little Old Boy. He shared for the first time that he actually has two mothers. While talking about his father’s memorial service coming up — his dad passed away three years ago from a chronic illness — his biological mom reminded him, “Are you holding the service there? You must give a monetary gift to that mother as well. It’s only right.”
She then opened up, saying, “I divorced Hyun-min’s father when he was just three years old, and his dad remarried three years after that. After the divorce, I would occasionally let him meet his father outside, and after doing that for holidays and stuff, I got comfortable sending the kids over to him.”
Yoon Hyun-min said, “My friends are always surprised when I tell them I call my stepmother ‘mother’.” His biological mom chimed in, “It might have felt a little awkward, but I told him to call his stepmother ‘mother.’ I said, ‘Are you going to call the person living with your father ‘aunt’?’ They got along well until he passed away.”
She also shared, “Thanks to my older sister’s thoughtfulness, I was able to see Hyun-min’s father before he passed. And because of his stepmother’s kindness, I was allowed to attend the funeral too. Please tell her I’m truly grateful. Before he passed, his father felt so bad for breaking up our family when you were just a little kid.”
Later, Yoon Hyun-min visited his stepmom and gave her an early Mother’s Day gift. He asked her, “Was it difficult when you first met me?” She sweetly replied, “You were good to me. Your father also played his part well, so there was nothing uncomfortable.”
Yoon also shared a touching story about the time he took a two-year break from acting to take care of his dad. “At that time, my father asked me, ‘Are you ruined now? Why aren’t you working?’ It made me realize that maybe seeing me on TV again would lift his spirits. So I begged my agency, ‘Is there anything I can do to get on TV quickly?’ Luckily, a variety show offer came through. They said it would air in three weeks, so I filmed it right away. But it’s so heartbreaking that he passed away before even seeing the first episode.”
He mentioned that his half-sibling is getting married soon. His stepmother joked with him, “You should get married too,” but Yoon Hyun-min laughed and admitted he’s not really into the idea of marriage.
